Surface Laptop vs. Surface Book: We compare price, features, specs - reddanstivoung
abrady@idgcommunications.com Living somewhere between Surface In favor of 4 and Surface Quran in Microsoft's parentage-up, the Surface Laptop would look to offer an ideal balance between portability, performance and price.
Updated July 20, 2017 with information from our retrospect of the Surface Laptop. Ensure knocked out the Performance section below for the bulk of the news, in our benchmarked speed and battery life-time tests.
With the debut of the Surface Laptop computer, Microsoft has a olde worlde cousin to its brawny Surface Book—similarly attribute, but very different otherwise. It can be a ruffian choice if both premium products have caught your eye.
We've now tested the Surface Laptop computer, which is currently happening sale from Amazon and other retailers. What we discovered when we compared the two is that the modern Surface Laptop computer comes close and even surpasses the original Surface Book in terms of execution. What a difference a few years make!
Powerful components boost the Surface Laptop
Let's starting by talking near what makes to each one Surface its own device. Remember that Microsoft 1st debuted the Surface Hold in 2015, and then refreshed it with the Surface Book Performance Pedestal in 2016. The Surface Laptop is the most recent of the three, entr in June 2017. We reviewed a $1,299 (Kaby Lake) Core i5/8GB/256GB SSD Surface Laptop, comparing it to the two Surface Books we've reviewed: a $1,700 (Skylake) Core i7/16GB/512GB SSD Surface Book, addition the $3,300 Core i7 (Skylake)/16GB/1TB Open Book with Performance Base.
IDG The operating system is a big difference. Microsoft built the Rise Al-Qur'an around Windows 10 Pro, with a suite of productivity components. The Surface Laptop, on the other manus, ships with Microsoft's new Windows 10 S operating arrangement, configured to straddle the divide between an educational environment and the employed world. Microsoft also provides an ascent path from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro.
Microsoft The Surface Book's hinge allows information technology to crimp…almost flat.
Design involves more hammy differences. Because the Surface Book's theme song High-power Fulcrum hinge doesn't fold planar, the Book can feel somewhat thick and unwieldy, specially compared to the Surface Laptop's svelte 0.57-inch visibility. Weight follows suit: Compared to the Surface Book with Performance Base (3.63 pounds), the 2.76-lumber Laptop shaves sour all but a ram down.
The Come out Reserve's vantage, of class, is that information technology's a 2-in-1 whose display detaches to become a pad of paper. The Surface Laptop has no pad option, not true a 360-degree hinge to enable a lozenge mode. Habitual pen users should too be aware that the Surface Book includes a Surface Pen, while the Surface Laptop does not.
Microsoft The Surface Laptop reclines approximately as much as the Surface Word of God, but it can't turn into a tablet like the Surface Holy Writ can.
Newer components are one way the Surface Laptop shines. Microsoft's Surface Book was originally built in 2015 and uses an older Skylake processor. Microsoft's 2016 Performance Base refresh affected only the discrete GPU. The Surface Laptop opts for Intel's most current Kaby Lake chip, but graphics are integrated. Former corners cut happening the Surface Laptop computer admit smaller storage options and a glower-resolution display and camera.
At long last, on that point's battery life. Microsoft promises a big 14.5 hours of battery life from the Surface Laptop. If you choose for the high-death Surface Record book with the Performance Base, Microsoft promises evenmore: 16 hours. Actually, Eastern Samoa our tests show below, the electric battery liveliness is a little little. In either case, though, you'll probably be a selfsame contented customer.
Surface Script offers better alternative in pricing
Candidly, neither the Surface Book nor the Laptop is particularly affordable. At $999, though, Microsoft has positioned the Surface Laptop Eastern Samoa an alternative to the Apple Macbook Airs that are a common sight around campus. The Surface Book, in the meantime, ranges from pricey to insanely expensive. Even though this story compares the Surface Book to the Surface Laptop, anyone willing to spend upwards of $3,300 should also seek out other, more updated options.
IDG Right immediately, the Surface Book offers many more choices than the Surface Laptop.
Although we haven't tested the two lowest-cost Surface Laptops, we'd advise against purchasing them. Their 4GB of RAM is barely adequate for today's apps, rent alone tomorrow's. Collegiate life is about exploration, and skating by with 4GB of memory over the trend of four years seems risky.
For that reason, we'd recommend start with the $1,599 Core i7/8GB/256GB Surface Laptop arsenic your minimum option—yes, o'er the $1,299 version we tested. The $1,599 version is the one nigh comparable with the Surface Book, which offers 8GB of memory from crest to rear.
Jorge Arzac/IDG The Surface Laptop comes in four colours: Burgundy, Platinum, Greenish blue, and Graphite Gold. The Surface Book offers just one color, aluminum.
Though there's no version of the Surface Laptop that directly compares to the Rise up Book, in theory the former seems to offer better bang for the buck. Moot the Substance i7 (Kaby Lake)/8GB RAM/256GB SSD model of the Laptop: At $1,599, it's about $800 cheaper than an "congruent" Surface Word of God exemplary. We'd vastly prefer that Surface Book because of its discrete GPU (something the Laptop doesn't offer), only it's also stuck with that older Skylake chip. The $800 difference is a ton.
Eventually, we hope Microsoft adds a Core m option to the Surface Laptop—nudging down performance a bit, certainly, only credibly sullen the price also. Competitory laptops like the Horsepower Spectre x360 (2017) arguably fling a far better option at the $1,200 to $1,300 price dot.
How they feel under your fingers
Both the Surface Book and the Surface Laptop finger semisolid in the hand, and can be supported by holding the base. Both flavor robust and comfortable on the desk, also as on your swosh. I undergo no subject with the Surface Laptop's Alcantara-clad keyboard, which reminds me of the Surface Affirmative 4's Premium Type Cover. The trackpad and keyboard on both are excellent.
Sign Hachman / IDG The Surface Laptop computer's touchpad and keyboard feel very much ilk the Surface Pro 4.
A significant downside to the Surface Laptop is its limited connectivity, especially the single USB 3.0 Type-A port wine (and atomic number 102 USB-C). Increasingly devices—heck, even Microsoft's aged Lumia 950XL headphone—throw moved to USB-C for some charging and I/O connectivity. The Surface Book has no USB-C, but at least it has two USB 3.0 Type A connectors.
Mark out Hachman / IDG Unfortunately, the Surface Laptop has a distinct lack of expansion slots.
Microsoft remains committed to its Surface connector, which allows Surface owners to share chargers and connect to Microsoft's Surface Dock. That accessory adds an additional four USB 3.0 ports, two miniDP ports, and gigabit ethernet—but it costs an extra $200, too. Fortunately, the Dock industrial plant with either device.
Inking works well with the Surface Pen that's included with the Surface Book, just you'll have to buy one for the Surface Laptop computer. (Microsoft immediately sells an improved Coat Write out with 4,096 levels of pressure sensibility and "tilt" support, allowing you to hold your pen at an angle to provide a broader stroke of extremity ink.) Both devices too work with the Surface Telephone dial, though you're not able to use the Telephone dial onscreen with either.
Note that the Book also has a high-resolution front-facing camera besides as a rear camera. If you design to take pictures with a tablet, that may affect your decision.
Performance: 3D graphics is the difference
You might think that the Skin-deep Book, with its discrete GPU and emphasis on raw performance, would blow the Laptop computer away. And in some cases, information technology does. But steady improvements in the Intel Core chips and other components eat into the Book's conduct—and in close to cases, surpass it.
Case in point: the basic PCMark tests. We've combined the Turn (spreadsheets and Bible processing), Habitation (roughly standard gaming, photo manipulation, and World Wide Web browsing) and Creative (photograph and video editing, heavier play, and photo manipulation) to better show how all three devices liken. I know the Book with Performance Base blows the others retired of the pee in price of Home performance, but the Laptop does very well for itself here.
IDG Piece of that, I think, is imputable the performance of the Kaby Lake chip inside the Surface Laptop. The Core i5 holds its own against the older Core i7 chips, making our Cinebench CPU rendering test as well arsenic the prolonged Handbrake transcoding test a wash.
IDG
IDG
IDG What should you base your purchasing decision on, and so? Well, there's price, of course: The Laptop computer wins handily here. Simply if you're looking for some separation between the two Books and the Laptop in damage of performance, you should look at the 3DMark Sky Diver benchmark:
IDG Hera, it's non steady close. The Come out Book blows the Laptop away, as IT should.
But there's the final metric: battery life. With batteries in some the padand base, you power believe that the Book would again reign supreme. Simply the Laptop moved the speakers into the keyboard, release up many additional place for battery that the Book lacked. The result is closer than you might think. I ne'er thought I'd be saying this, only 11 hours of battery life might fitting be the "good adequate" threshold that you want.
IDG In some case, you can't go wrong with either device.
Last: Two Surfaces, nonpareil recommendation
Choosing between the Surface Book and Surface Laptop computer Crataegus oxycantha come down to price for most multitude, but the departure in my mind is simply 3D games. If you necessitate the power of a holy GPU, you may want to pay for the Surface Book. Otherwise, the Surface Laptop does the trick.
Granted, there are strange considerations: a hefty vs. thin-and-unhorse design, a feature-stuffed versus a curated configuration, and distinctive features like the Surface Book's clastic showing or the Surface Laptop computer's Alcantara-clad keyboard. Clearly, the Surface Laptop computer offers a more up-to-date mix of components, an advantage the Surface Book could eliminate if Microsoft did a major refresh.
Unless you simply have to give the baron of a dedicated GPU, I'd recommend the Shallow Laptop computer as the superior machine. Non only is IT substantially cheaper, but the performance differences are negligible. The Laptop's battery life is within shooting outdistance of the Book, too. For now, Microsoft hasn't indicated that the Surface Leger will be refreshed anytime soon. And if it ISN't, you should vest in Microsoft's Surface Laptop.
